Comcast drops Fox bid, paving way for sale to Disney

Jul 19, 2018

NEW YORK — Comcast is dropping its bid for Fox's entertainment businesses, paving the way for Disney to boost its upcoming streaming service by buying the studios behind "The Simpsons" and X-Men. Comcast can now focus on its pursuit of European pay-TV operator Sky, a deal that would give the Philadelphia-based cable and media company a larger presence outside the U.S. The moves come as the media landscape is shifting dramatically. Cable and telecom companies are buying content makers to compete with popular streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon. AT&T bought Time Warner last month for $81 billion. Comcast...

Jul 19, 2018

ESSEX, Vt. — A woman was left with severe burns and blisters on her legs after encountering an invasive species of plant in Vermont. Charlotte Murphy says she developed painful blisters overnight after brushing against poison parsnip. Murphy says the blisters got so bad she had to go to the hospital to see a burn specialist. The Essex woman learned her injuries were comparable to second-degree burns and were caused by the invasive plant. David Grass of the Vermont Department of Health says the sap in the parsnip has a chemical reaction with the sun that causes accelerated burns. He...

Jul 19, 2018

DETROIT — In March of 2016, Keith Reynolds flew from California to Atlanta so he could claim his spot in line at 4 a.m., and get a three-hour head start on his West Coast competitors. Tesla was taking $1,000 deposits for its new electric car, the Model 3, priced starting at $35,000. And Reynolds had to have one. He managed to land near the top of the waiting list. Flash forward more than two years, through much-publicized production delays. Reynolds is still waiting. And now, like others in the U.S. on a waiting list of about 420,000 worldwide, he worries...

Prosecutors: Russian hackers exploit US cyber vulnerability

Jul 19, 2018

WASHINGTON — Exactly seven months before the 2016 presidential election, Russian government hackers made it onto a Democratic committee's network. One of their carefully crafted fraudulent emails had hit pay dirt, enticing an employee to click a link and enter her password. That breach of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee was the first significant step in gaining access to the Democratic National Committee network. To steal politically sensitive information, prosecutors say, the hackers exploited some of the United States' own computer infrastructure against it, using servers they leased in Arizona and Illinois. The details were included in an indictment released...
