Premium Mortgage completes a 16 kW solar project in Rochester, NY, which supports their dedication to reducing carbon footprint and controlling energy costs.

Rochester, NY – Premium Mortgage is a leading local mortgage lender that prides itself on providing personalized attention to all of its clients in order to find a loan program tailored to individual circumstances and needs. In an effort to gain control of its energy costs and provide long-term price certainty, Premium Mortgage contracted Power Management to install a 16 kW solar PV system on the rooftop of their building; making the project Brighton’s 1st commercial solar PV system.

Power Management developed a solar project for Premium Mortgage that addressed Premium’s desire to have more control over the energy expenses of their building while practicing sustainability. After evaluating various options, it was determined that non-penetrating ballast roof mounted panels were the best fit for the building’s roof space.

“While we could have deployed our capital to generate greater returns, I personally feel obligated to set examples for others in securing our environmental future. Renewable energy is the foundation on which our economy will rise.” -Mike Donoghue, President, Premium Mortgage

Premium Mortgage’s decision to pursue this solar project has both environmental and financial benefits. Once complete, the project will generate approximately 55% of the electricity consumption within the building’s effective space each year. This solar PV system will produce 384,622 kWh over the 25-year warrantied life, offsetting 210,915 lbs. of CO2; equivalent to planting over 9,000 trees or the reduction of 269,025 miles driven by a compact car. Power Management secured $16,000 in NYSERDA Rebates for this project. In addition, Premium Mortgage will receive a 30% federal Investment Tax Credit, currently available for all solar projects in the U.S installed by 2021, and will benefit from the accelerated depreciation of the system over five years. The value of the solar energy generated will provide a savings of 70% over the anticipated market rate throughout the 25-year life of the system, and will have a six to seven year payback.

“Premium Mortgage has taken advantage of solar PV and generated clean, green electricity that provides a low-cost, long-term energy price hedging strategy that outperforms traditional power sources. They truly lead by example, devoting resources that aid in carbon reduction and supporting a sustainable cause while improving their bottom line.” -Michael Hedges, Director of Business Development, Power Management

Lifelike robots made in Hong Kong meant to win over humans

Jan 16, 2018

HONG KONG — David Hanson envisions a future in which AI-powered robots evolve to become "super-intelligent genius machines" that might help solve some of mankind's most challenging problems. If only it were as simple as that. The Texas-born former sculptor at Walt Disney Imagineering and his Hong Kong-based startup Hanson Robotics are combining artificial intelligence with southern China's expertise in toy design, electronics and manufacturing to craft humanoid "social robots" with faces designed to be lifelike and appealing enough to win trust from humans who interact with them. Hanson, 49, is perhaps best known as the creator of Sophia, a...

Glowing red lava rolls down slopes of Philippine volcano

Jan 16, 2018

LEGAZPI, Philippines — Glowing red lava rolled down the slopes of a Philippine volcano Tuesday morning as authorities maintained a warning of a possible hazardous eruption. The lava was quietly flowing in some places but at times Mount Mayon was erupting like a fountain, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said. Lava had advanced up to 2 kilometers (1.24 miles) from the crater, and ash reached up to 2 kilometers and fell on nearby communities. Nearly 15,000 people have fled the danger zone within 6 to 7 kilometers of Mayon, and the institute strongly advised people not to re-enter...

Jan 16, 2018

LONDON — Tempted to stifle a loud or untimely sneeze? Let it out instead, doctors in England warned Monday based on the very unusual case of a man who ruptured the back of his throat when he tried to suppress a sneeze. In a case study published in the journal BMJ Case Reports, doctors described their initial confusion when the previously healthy man turned up in the emergency room of a Leicester hospital, complaining of swallowing difficulties and "a popping sensation" in his swollen neck. The 34-year-old patient told them his problems started after he tried to stop a forceful...

CEO: Mercedes may miss emission goal if electrics don't sell

Jan 16, 2018

DETROIT — If customers don't buy electric and more efficient cars and trucks, then Mercedes may not be able to meet government-imposed carbon dioxide emissions standards across the globe, its top executive says. Dieter Zetsche, CEO of German automaker Daimler AG and head of its Mercedes luxury division, told reporters at the Detroit auto show Monday that he can't guarantee compliance. Daimler said it is spending 10 billion euros to develop new electric vehicles in the coming years and says it will launch a production model of its EQ electric brand in this decade. By 2022, the company says it...

Seized ivory probed for clues that could help save elephants

Jan 16, 2018

ALBANY, N.Y. — Scientists are using information gleaned from both illegal ivory art and elephant dung to provide clues that could help save the lives of pachyderms that are being slaughtered for their tusks in Africa. The wildlife detective work involves cutting up seized artifacts including bangle bracelets and statues of Chinese deities and subjecting them to carbon dating to determine when the elephants were killed. DNA from the ivory art is then compared to a DNA database derived from elephant dung to pinpoint where they lived. What scientists learn may not put a particular poacher in jail, but will...
